Cathedral of the Assumption

Early Christian cathedral with a bell tower built from amphitheatre stone

Pula's cathedral has roots going back to the 4th century, making it one of the earliest Christian buildings in the Adriatic. The basic structure took its current form in the 5th and 6th centuries, and the floor mosaics, columns, and facade were modified repeatedly right through to the 14th century. The bell tower, added in the 17th century, was built using stone taken directly from the nearby Roman amphitheatre — a practical repurposing that gives the tower its distinctive patched appearance. In summer, the cathedral hosts classical music concerts that make good use of the acoustics.
