Forum and Temple of Augustus

Ancient Roman forum with the intact Temple of Augustus

The main square of ancient and medieval Pula, built in the 1st century BC on embanked shoreland. The Forum served as the religious, administrative, and legal centre of the Roman city. Of the original three temples on the north side, only the Temple of Augustus survives intact — a beautifully proportioned building that now houses a small collection of Roman sculpture. The Forum remains the civic heart of Pula, and in summer it hosts cultural performances.

A story
The Temple of Augustus on the Forum is one of the best-preserved Roman temples anywhere in the world, largely because it spent several centuries as a granary — the Venetian administration found it more useful as a food store than a ruin, which saved it from being quarried for building stone like most of Pula's other Roman monuments.
