Split's main theatre occupies a handsome neo-baroque building on the Trg Gaje Bulata square just north of the old town. The interior has been restored and is worth seeing for the 19th-century decoration alone — painted ceiling, carved galleries, red velvet. Productions run from September through June across opera, ballet, drama, and occasional concert programmes.
The theatre also hosts the Split Summer Festival in July and August, a long-running outdoor arts festival that takes over multiple venues across the old town — the Peristyle, the Prokurative (Republic Square), and stages set up within the palace walls. The Summer Festival is the best time to see operatic performance in the palace context; the Peristyle concert, with the audience sitting in the Roman square, is one of the more remarkable concert experiences in Europe. Tickets for Summer Festival events can be bought at the theatre box office or at various points around the city.
