Split's old town is small, pedestrianised, and best explored on foot — cars are not allowed inside the palace walls, and even beyond them the streets are narrow and often blocked. City buses (Promet Split) cover the outer suburbs and the beaches; a single ticket is cheap and can be bought from the driver or from tisak kiosks. Taxis are plentiful and Uber works in the city. The most useful transport for visitors is probably the ferry: the main harbour sits directly next to the old town, and boats leave from here for every major Dalmatian island. Buy tickets at the Jadrolinija or Krilo offices at the terminal. Airport buses run to and from Split International Airport (about 20 km west) roughly every 30 minutes and take 30–40 minutes.
