Summer (June to early September) is high season: hot, sunny, busy, and with ferries to every island running at full capacity. It can be intense — Split is on the regular European cruise-ship circuit and the old town fills up by mid-morning — but the weather is perfect for swimming and the nightlife is at its peak. May, June and September are better: still warm enough for the beach, the sea is warm from July onwards, and prices and crowds are noticeably lower. Late April and early October are the shoulder seasons and are pleasant for sightseeing but not always for swimming. Winter is mild (daytime highs around 10°C) and the old town is peaceful, but most of the island ferries are cut back and a lot of restaurants and hotels close between November and March.
