Split's old town is built inside and around the walls of Diocletian's Palace — a living city inside a Roman emperor's retirement home. The palace, the waterfront, and Marjan Hill are all within walking distance of each other. Beyond the old town, the islands visible from the harbour are all reachable by ferry in under two hours.
