Split is the best base on the Dalmatian coast for day trips. The easiest are the islands: ferries from the main port run to Brač (home of the Zlatni Rat beach) in about an hour, to Hvar (the trendiest of the Dalmatian islands, with a walled old town and good nightlife) in an hour by catamaran, to Šolta (quieter, less developed) in 50 minutes, and further out to Vis, the most remote. On the mainland, the Krka National Park — a chain of limestone waterfalls tumbling through a wooded gorge — is an hour north and one of the most popular outings in Croatia. The UNESCO-listed walled town of Trogir, a smaller and prettier cousin of Split, is 25 minutes west by local bus. Omiš, at the mouth of the Cetina river, is known for river rafting and canyoning and is 35 minutes south. And the Roman ruins of Salona, Diocletian's original birthplace, are a short bus ride from the city.
