Marjan Hill

The forested peninsula that rises behind the old town, Marjan Hill is Split's green lung and the place where locals go to escape the summer crowds. A protected nature park with walking and cycling trails through pine and holm oak forest, it offers several viewpoints over the city, the harbour, and the string of islands — Brač, Šolta, Hvar — visible to the south.

The main path starts at the western end of the Riva and climbs gently through the trees to the summit (178m). Along the way are a handful of small medieval churches cut into the cliff face, several viewpoint terraces, and the beaches at Kašjuni and Bene below. The descent on the far side brings you to the Meštrović Gallery. The whole circuit takes about two hours at a leisurely pace. In the evenings, this is where Split residents go for a walk — it is noticeably less tourist-heavy than the palace district even in high summer.
