The Zagreb Funicular has been climbing the same 66-metre stretch of hillside between Tomićeva Street and the Strossmayer Promenade since 1890, making it one of the oldest still in operation in Europe — and, at 66 metres in length and a 55-second ride, often described as the shortest public transport line in the world. The two original cars, restored several times, are still in use; the system is protected as a cultural monument.
It costs less than a euro and saves you climbing the steep wooden steps that run alongside. The Strossmayer Promenade at the top, with its long view over the rooftops of the Lower Town, is one of the city's classic evening walks.
