The Museum of Contemporary Art is the main reason many visitors cross the Sava into Novi Zagreb. Its large modern building holds Croatian and international contemporary work, installations, video, design, and the kind of space older central museums cannot provide.
It also helps you see a different Zagreb: wide roads, socialist-era planning, and a newer cultural geography beyond the old upper and lower towns. Check current exhibitions before going, because temporary shows often define the visit.
