Mariánské Lázně, better known by its old German name Marienbad, is one of the great spa towns of western Bohemia. It sits in green hills near the German border, with colonnades, mineral springs, formal parks, and the slightly theatrical calm of a town built for walking slowly between cures.
The town is part of the transnational UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe, alongside Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně in the Czech spa triangle. Its best architecture comes from the 19th-century spa boom, when European rulers, composers, writers, and wealthy patients came here for air, water, and appearances.
You do not need to believe in the medical claims to enjoy the place. The pleasure is in the ritual: taste a spring, listen to the Singing Fountain, walk the colonnade, and let the parks do their quiet work.
