Villa Primavesi

Art Nouveau / Wiener-Werkstätte villa by Josef Hoffmann's circle

The Villa Primavesi, on the road that climbs from the old town toward the cathedral, is the finest secessionist building in Moravia. It was built in 1905 for the banker Otto Primavesi, with interiors and additions by Josef Hoffmann and Anton Hanak of the Wiener Werkstätte during the family's brief period of high-Viennese taste.

The grand house and its terraced garden survived the 20th century in various roles — Nazi headquarters, communist clubhouse, restaurant — before a careful restoration. Today the house is open for tours and the garden, with its sphinxes and ornamental pond, is open to the public. The interiors retain some of the original wallpaper, furniture and tilework.
