Antonín Dvořák Theatre

The Antonín Dvořák Theatre is Ostrava's main opera house, opened in 1907 as the German-language Stadttheater Mährisch-Ostrau and renamed after the Czech composer following the First World War. The neo-Baroque interior — gilded plasterwork, a painted ceiling and a chandelier the size of a Trabant — feels lifted from a much grander city.

It is the main stage of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, which performs opera, ballet and drama in a varied season from September to June. Even if you do not catch a performance, the lobby is worth a glance during the day; guided tours run on weekend afternoons.
