The former Carlsberg brewery site in western Vesterbro is being transformed into a new city district. The old brewing buildings — some architecturally significant, including the Elephant Gate and the original cellars — are being converted into apartments, offices, a hotel, and cultural spaces, while new residential buildings fill the former open lots. The process is ongoing and the result is a neighbourhood mid-transformation.
The Carlsberg Visitor Centre tells the story of Danish brewing and the company's history. The Elephant Gate, with its four elephant sculptures supporting the main arch, is the most recognisable element of the old complex. Even mid-construction, the district is worth visiting to see the scale of the original industrial operation.
