The Carmelite Priory is one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in Scandinavia, founded in 1430 and still largely intact. The Gothic brick church, the cloister, and the chapter house survived the Reformation (Denmark converted to Lutheranism in 1536) because the buildings were converted rather than demolished — the church became the town's parish church, the priory became a school.
The building now houses the Helsingør City Museum, and the medieval cloister is one of the most peaceful spots in the city. The contrast between the ancient stones and the castle immediately to the north is striking. Free to visit the exterior; the museum charges a small entry fee.
