Gurre Slotsruin

Gurre Slotsruin is the ruin of a medieval royal castle north-west of Helsingør. Its origins are hazy, but it became closely associated with King Valdemar IV, who expanded the castle in the 14th century and appears in later Danish legend as refusing to give it up even for heaven.

Only low walls and the base of the main tower remain, but the site is atmospheric and works well as a quiet detour from Helsingør's better-known royal sights.
