M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark

One of the most cleverly designed museums in Scandinavia, the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark was built inside and around a 19th-century dry dock next to Kronborg Castle. Danish architect Bjarke Ingels (BIG) sank the museum below ground level into the old dock, with a series of ramps and bridges linking the galleries across the dock floor. The dock walls themselves become exhibition space.

The collection covers 600 years of Danish maritime history, from the Viking age through the Age of Sail to modern container shipping. Denmark has been a major maritime nation for much of its history, and the exhibits are serious — navigation, trade, naval warfare, and the social life of sailors are all covered in depth. Worth combining with a visit to Kronborg immediately adjacent.
