Hillerod Rectory

18th-century half-timbered parsonage, the oldest house in town

Tucked off the central market square, the Hillerod Rectory (Hillerod Praestegard) is a half-timbered yellow-and-black house from 1721, one of the oldest surviving buildings in town and a rare survivor of the great fire of 1834 that destroyed much of central Hillerod. It is a private residence and you cannot go inside, but the building is on every walking tour and is worth the two-minute detour from the market square — the kind of low, asymmetric, dignified house that gives older Danish towns their character.
