Store Dyrehave

Royal hunting forest on the southern edge of town, UNESCO-listed

Store Dyrehave ("Great Animal Park") is the old royal hunting forest on the southern outskirts of Hillerod, listed by UNESCO as part of the Par Force Hunting Landscape in North Zealand. Most of the forest is regrowth beech, oak and pine, but the network of straight rides cut through it — running for kilometres in dead-straight lines and converging on star-shaped clearings — dates from 1680 and is the reason for the UNESCO listing.

It is also a fine, lightly used local woodland for walking and cycling. Half a dozen marked routes start from car parks along Kobenhavnsvej; a flat 7-km loop will take you through some of the best surviving stretches in about two hours. Deer are common in early morning and late afternoon.

A story
The grid of star-shaped rides cut through the forest in the 1680s was laid out for 'par force' hunting — a kind of stag-chasing done from horseback. The geometry survives because the Crown stopped using the rides for sport, but kept the forest. UNESCO listed it as a cultural landscape in 2015.
