The Gallen-Kallela Museum occupies Tarvaspää, the castle-like studio and home designed by Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela beside Laajalahti Bay. The building is half artwork itself, mixing National Romantic ambition with a very personal lakeside setting.
Exhibitions explore Gallen-Kallela's work and Finnish visual culture, but the visit is also about place: stone walls, forest, water, and the idea of an artist building a world around his studio. It makes an excellent quieter counterpoint to Helsinki's larger museums.
