Tapiola

Postwar modernist garden city — Finland's most influential planned suburb

Address Tapiola, 02100 Espoo

Tapiola was conceived in 1951 as Finland's first comprehensive postwar new town — a low-density garden city designed around walking, green space, and the integration of architecture into the surrounding pine forest. Aarne Ervi, Viljo Revell, Alvar Aalto, and a generation of other Finnish modernists each contributed buildings. The early sections still feel coherent: flat-roofed apartment blocks set among pine, the central pond, and the pedestrian-scale shopping plaza Heikintori.

Later development, including the large Ainoa shopping centre and the metro extension, has reshaped the centre considerably. But the original Tapiola district remains an important destination for anyone interested in postwar urbanism — guided architectural tours run in summer through the WeeGee centre. Take the metro from Helsinki; Tapiola is 18 minutes from Kamppi.
