Sajos

Modern timber building housing the Finnish Sámi Parliament and cultural centre

Sajos opened in 2012 as the administrative and cultural seat of the Finnish Sámi — the building houses the Finnish Sámi Parliament, the Sámi Education Institute, the Sámi Library, and event spaces used for performances, exhibitions, and craft demonstrations. The architecture is one of the most striking modern buildings anywhere in Finnish Lapland: a sweeping low-slung structure in heavy timber, with a curved auditorium that echoes a Sámi lavvu tent and panoramic windows facing the Juutuanjoki river.

Visitors are welcome in the public areas during opening hours. The cafeteria serves modern Sámi cuisine at lunchtime; the small shop sells craft, books, and music. Guided tours of the Parliament chamber run by appointment. Events — concerts, joik performances, film screenings — are listed on the centre's website.
