The Jyväskylä Art Museum (Jyväskylän taidemuseo) is the main fine art museum for the Central Finland region, housed in a handsome 1930s functionalist building on Kauppakatu, the main shopping street. The permanent collection focuses on Finnish art from the 19th century to the present, with a good representation of the Finnish Romantic period alongside 20th-century modernism.
The museum is particularly strong on Central Finnish artists who drew on the lake landscapes and rural life of the region. Temporary exhibitions are ambitious for a city of this size and often bring international contemporary art to Jyväskylä. The building itself is worth a look — the interiors have been carefully preserved, with the original terrazzo floors and generous proportions of 1930s civic architecture.
