St. Olaf's Church (Olaf's kirkko) is one of Jyväskylä's more striking religious buildings, a Roman Catholic church built in 1954 in the northern part of the city centre. Catholic churches are unusual in predominantly Lutheran Finland, and this one serves the city's small Catholic community while also drawing curious visitors for its architecture.
The building is modernist in character, with a clean white exterior and a tower that serves as a distinctive local landmark. The interior is spare and contemplative, with stained glass providing the principal colour. The church is open to visitors and sits near Taulumäki, making it easy to combine with a visit to the Lutheran church. The combination gives a useful perspective on how two very different Christian traditions approached building design in the same mid-20th-century moment.
