The Basilica of Saint-Martin d'Ainay is one of Lyon's great old churches, a Romanesque survivor on the Presqu'ile with roots in a powerful medieval abbey. Its heavy columns, restrained stonework, mosaics, and quiet nave feel very different from the city's grander Baroque and nineteenth-century churches.
It is easy to miss while moving between Bellecour and Perrache, but worth stepping inside. Ainay gives Lyon a deep-time religious layer and a calm architectural pause in a district better known for shopping streets and traffic.
