Musée des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France

A very particular museum, unique in France: it holds the masterpieces created by craftspeople awarded the title Meilleur Ouvrier de France, a national distinction handed out since 1924 to recognise top-tier artisans. The exhibits range from staggeringly intricate marquetry and silverwork to wedding cakes, glasswork and saddles — objects made by butchers, pastry chefs, jewellers, stonemasons and many more.

It is small but unexpectedly engrossing. Allow an hour. The location, in a 17th-century building beside the cathedral square, is convenient.
