Maurice Estève (1904–2001) was one of the major French abstract painters of the post-war period, born in the village of Culan, just south of Bourges. He donated a large body of work to his region, and it is displayed in the Hôtel des Échevins, a flamboyant Gothic mansion in the centre of the old town.
