Casa de les Albères

Small ethnographic museum on Catalan rural traditions in the Albères massif

A modest but well-curated ethnographic museum in the old village of Argelès, opened in 2003 to document the rural traditions of the Albères region — the easternmost spur of the Pyrenees that runs from here south into Catalan Spain. Displays cover cork-stripping, viticulture, sheep-farming, cooperage and the everyday life of an Albères farming household.

A Catalan-language library on the upper floor holds a useful collection of regional history. Entry is modest; opening hours are limited (afternoons mainly, closed Sundays and Mondays out of season). Forty minutes is enough; combine with a walk through the old village and a visit to Notre-Dame dels Prats.
