Église Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin

The Église Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin is the oldest parish church in Nice still in active use, its current building dating to the 17th century on foundations that are considerably older. The austere stone facade on Place Saint-Augustin in Vieux Nice gives no hint of the ornate baroque interior, which contains a Pietà attributed (with varying degrees of confidence) to Louis Bréa, the master of the Nice School of painting.

The church is rarely crowded and offers a genuinely quiet refuge from the old town bustle. The sacristy holds several important 15th and 16th-century paintings. Services are held daily and the church is open to visitors most mornings.

A story
Martin Luther attended Mass at the original church on this site in 1510 during his walk from Germany to Rome — one of the few documented stops of his pre-Reformation pilgrimage. A century later, Garibaldi was baptised in the replacement church built by the Augustinians. The church has thus witnessed two of the most consequential biographical moments of 16th and 19th-century European history without particularly advertising the fact.
