Nice Cathedral

Tucked into the narrow streets of Vieux Nice, the Cathedral of Saint Reparata is easy to walk past — its modest facade blends in with the surrounding buildings. Step inside, though, and you find a richly decorated baroque interior dating to the 17th century, with ten ornate side chapels, gilded stucco, and trompe-l'oeil frescoes. The cathedral is dedicated to a 15th-century Palestinian martyr whose body is said to have drifted across the Mediterranean in a boat guided by angels. Recent archaeological excavations beneath the building have revealed traces of earlier churches and a Roman-era bath complex. A quiet refuge from the bustle of the old town just outside.
