Corum

Conference and opera complex housing the Opéra Berlioz

The Corum, a vast pink-granite congress centre completed in 1990 to a design by Claude Vasconi, sits at the northern end of the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle. Inside is the Opéra Berlioz, a 2,000-seat concert hall with very fine acoustics, and the principal venue for the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier each July.

Most visitors give the building a glance from outside, but the roof terrace is open to the public and offers good views back across the old town toward the cathedral. The building looks like a slab of cake from one angle, a cruise ship from another — Vasconi himself called it a "monument to civic life."
