Jardin des Plantes

France's oldest botanical garden, founded in 1593

A small green oasis just north of the medieval town, established in 1593 to grow medicinal plants for Montpellier's famous medical school. It is the oldest botanical garden in France. The collection includes a venerable ginkgo biloba planted in 1795, hothouses of exotic species, an English-style garden, and a still-functioning system of 17th-century terraces.

Generations of Montpellier students have used it as a study spot and a place to sneak a cigarette between lectures. Entry is free, and it is open most days except Mondays. A quick visit pairs well with the cathedral and the Faculty of Medicine next door.

A story
The garden was created in 1593 by Pierre Richer de Belleval at the request of Henri IV — making it the oldest botanical garden in France, predating the Jardin du Roi in Paris by three decades. Botanists from across Europe came to study here, and Linnaeus stopped by in the 1730s during his travels.
