Carré d'Art

Contemporary art museum and library by Norman Foster, opposite the Maison Carrée

The Carré d'Art, opened in 1993, is Norman Foster's deliberate modern echo of the Roman temple across the square. Steel and glass, columns of the same proportions, a portico facing the Maison Carrée — the dialogue between the two buildings is one of the most cited examples of contemporary architecture engaging with classical heritage.

Inside, the upper floors house a contemporary art museum with a strong collection of late-20th-century European and American work and frequent exhibitions. The lower floors are the city's main public library. The rooftop café offers excellent views over the Maison Carrée.
