The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor of Nîmes was consecrated in 1096 and has been remodelled in nearly every century since. The Romanesque frieze along the west front, partially preserved, depicts Old Testament scenes; the rest of the facade is a 19th-century reconstruction in Romanesque style following damage during the Wars of Religion.
The interior is largely 17th-century baroque with 19th-century additions. The cathedral is the centre of an attractive small square, the Place aux Herbes, ringed by cafés and worth a coffee even when the church is closed.
