Place du Marché

Small old-town square with the city's emblem — the crocodile chained to a palm

Place du Marché, off Rue de l'Horloge, holds the modern bronze sculpture of the Nîmes crocodile chained to a palm tree — the city's coat of arms, derived from a Roman coin commemorating Augustus's conquest of Egypt. Veterans of that campaign were settled in Nîmes and the city's emblem has shown the crocodile ever since.

It's a small square but a charged one — the crocodile and palm appear on everything in Nîmes from manhole covers to drink coasters. The square is also a pleasant café spot in its own right.
