Pont du Gard

A monumental Roman aqueduct bridge and one of the great day trips from Nimes.

The Pont du Gard is the showpiece of the Roman aqueduct that once carried water toward Nimes. Three tiers of pale limestone arches stride across the Gardon valley, combining engineering precision with a scale that still feels ceremonial nearly two thousand years later.

It lies outside Nimes, but it belongs naturally with the city's Roman story: the water that crossed here helped supply ancient Nemausus. The site works best as a half-day trip, with time to walk the riverbank trails, visit the interpretation centre, and see how the bridge changes character as the sun moves across the stone.
