Place de la Maison Carrée is where Roman temple meets contemporary architecture: the perfectly preserved Maison Carrée on one side, Norman Foster's glass-and-steel Carré d'Art on the other, and a pedestrianised square between them lined with cafés.
The dialogue between the two buildings is the point of the place. In good weather the terraces fill and the square becomes one of the city's main open-air living rooms. It is the obvious meeting spot for a drink and a sit-down look at both buildings at once.
