The Church of Saint-François-des-Cordeliers is attached to the Palais Ducal in the Vieille Ville and served as the burial place of the Dukes of Lorraine. The tombs of the ducal family line the interior, including the elaborate tomb of Philippe de Gueldres, second wife of René II, sculpted in 1519 in a style that mixes Gothic and Renaissance in the manner of the Lorraine court.
The church is usually entered in conjunction with a visit to the Musée Lorrain in the adjacent palace. The most striking element is the late 15th-century chapel, the Chapelle Ronde, an elegant circular space that shows the cosmopolitan tastes of the Lorraine dukes at the peak of their power. The atmosphere is appropriately quiet and contemplative.
