The Basilique Saint-Épvre stands in the heart of the Vieille Ville, in the Grande Rue that runs through Nancy's medieval quarter. It is a 19th-century neo-Gothic church built on the site of an older collegiate church, and while it lacks the medieval authenticity of the cathedral, its scale is impressive and its position — at the top of a small square, with the old town's crooked streets leading down in every direction — makes it a useful landmark for exploring the quarter.
The church houses a fine statue of René II, the Duke who defeated Charles the Bold at the Battle of Nancy in 1477, and some good stained glass. Outside, the square fills with a small market on certain mornings, and the surrounding streets of the Vieille Ville — full of bookshops, antique dealers, and old facades — are among the most pleasant in the city.
