Pont de Normandie

Cable-stayed bridge spanning the Seine estuary

The Pont de Normandie crosses the Seine estuary just east of Honfleur, linking the town to Le Havre. The 2-kilometre span, supported by two slender concrete pylons fanning out into the cable stays, is one of the most striking pieces of modern French engineering and a small landmark in its own right.

Walking or cycling across is allowed — pedestrian and cycle paths run alongside the road — and the views over the estuary, Honfleur's old town to one side and the cranes of Le Havre to the other, are remarkable. Allow an hour return if you start in central Honfleur.

A story
When it opened in 1995 the Pont de Normandie's 856-metre central span was the longest of any cable-stayed bridge in the world — a record it held for four years.
