New Castle

The New Castle (Neues Schloss) stands on a wooded bluff above the old town, the former residence of the Margraves of Baden-Baden from the 15th century onwards. It is "new" only in relation to the older Hohenbaden castle higher up the hill. The current building is largely Renaissance with later neo-Gothic alterations.

The castle has been closed to the public for years pending restoration after a sale to a private owner. The terraced grounds and the steep path up from town are open, and the view back down over the rooftops of Baden-Baden is one of the best in the area. A short climb that earns its outlook.
