The Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church), on the Marktplatz above the Roman baths, is the most prominent religious building in the old town. The current structure mixes 13th-century Gothic with 15th-century vaulting and Baroque additions made after the church was damaged during the 17th century French invasions.
The interior is unexpectedly rich for a Lutheran parish church: a series of late-Gothic margrave tombs along the walls, an enormous Baroque crucifix carved from a single sandstone block, and stained glass that survived the wars. The chimes from the bell tower mark the rhythm of the old town. Open daily, no charge.
