Lindau's old town is small enough to walk in an hour, but the pleasures of the place are in slowing down: sitting at the harbour with the Alps across the water, wandering the medieval lanes, watching the ferries come and go. The lighthouse and the stone lion at the harbour mouth are the classic images of Lindau, but the churches and the old town hall repay closer attention. The lake itself — with cycling, swimming, and ferries to Austria and Switzerland — is the main reason most people stay more than a day.
