Brömserburg

The Brömserburg, also known as the Rheingau Wine Museum, is a sturdy 10th-century castle on the Rhine bank at the western end of Rüdesheim's old town. It is one of the oldest intact castles on the Rhine, and its thick round tower is a distinctive landmark visible from the opposite bank.

Inside, the Rheingau Wine Museum occupies the medieval rooms with a collection of around 2,000 wine-related exhibits: ancient wine glasses, barrels, presses, tools, and documents tracing the history of winemaking in the region from Roman times to the present. Visitors can also taste Rheingau wines on the castle terrace overlooking the Rhine — an excellent vantage point as the river bends here and the Bingen opposite comes into view. Open from March to November.

A story
The Brömserburg is one of the oldest surviving castles in the Rhine valley, with records going back to the 10th century. The Brömser family who gave it their name were wealthy Rüdesheim burghers who used the tower as a private fortress. Today it houses nearly 2,000 wine-related exhibits — a fitting second life for a building that sat at the heart of one of Germany's most famous wine regions.
