Medieval Torture Museum

Spread over 1,000 square metres on the Oberstrasse, this museum presents an extensive collection of torture and execution instruments from the medieval period: thumbscrews, knee-splitters, iron maidens, stocks, and worse. Alongside the physical objects are drawings, engravings, and documents that contextualise the instruments within medieval legal practice, witchcraft trials, and the Inquisition.

The museum is unambiguously geared toward tourist curiosity rather than scholarly inquiry, but the collection is substantial and many of the objects are genuinely antique. It is one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in Europe. Open daily in summer; reduced hours (Saturday and Sunday only) from November to Good Friday. Not recommended for young children.
