Bergen is the administrative capital of Rügen, sitting in the middle of the island where most of the railway lines meet. It is not a resort town and is not normally on the tourist itinerary — but the old town has a quiet, low-key charm and the twelfth-century Marienkirche, with its impressive Romanesque interior and surviving fragments of medieval frescoes, is worth a stop.
The Bergen station is the main railway hub for getting onto the island, with connections to Stralsund and the resort towns. The Ernst Moritz Arndt Tower on a hill just outside the centre gives a wide view across the island's pastoral interior.
