Rügen is connected to the mainland by the Rügen Bridge and the older Rügen Causeway at Stralsund. Both carry road and rail, with regular train services from Hamburg, Berlin, and Rostock to Stralsund and onward to Bergen auf Rügen, Binz, and Sassnitz.
By car, Rügen is around three hours from Hamburg and Berlin via the A20 motorway. Once on the island, distances are short — Binz to Cape Arkona is about an hour's drive.
Ferries run year-round between Sassnitz (and the smaller Mukran port nearby) and Trelleborg in Sweden, and seasonally to Bornholm in Denmark.
