A car gives the most freedom and is the obvious choice for the dispersed sights along the north and west coasts. The narrow-gauge Rasender Roland steam train connects Putbus with Binz, Sellin, Baabe, Granitz, and Göhren — slow, charming, and useful. Regional trains run from Bergen and Stralsund to Binz, Sassnitz, and Lauterbach.
Rügen is also one of the best bicycling islands in Germany. A well-marked cycle network covers most of the main destinations, with bike-rental shops in every resort town. Sand-tracked paths and quiet country lanes link the inland villages.
Buses fill the gaps, especially the seasonal shuttles to Cape Arkona (from Putgarten) and the Königsstuhl (from Hagen car park).
