One of Germany's most respected repertory theaters, the Schauspielhaus has been producing serious drama since 1919 and reached its creative peak during the long directorship of Claus Peymann in the 1970s and 1980s. Productions here regularly travel to Berlin and receive national attention. The building itself is a handsome 1950s reconstruction — the original was bombed — set in a small park on Königsallee.
If you are staying for more than a day and speak German, it is worth checking the program. Tickets are reasonably priced by German theater standards and the house sells out for popular productions.
