Starlight Express has been running in Bochum since 1988 in a purpose-built arena designed specifically for this production. The show is performed on roller skates, with tracks running through the auditorium so the cast passes close enough to touch. It is emphatically not high culture, but as spectacle it is genuinely impressive — the engineering of the space and the skating are both worth watching regardless of your feelings about Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The German production has adapted the show significantly over the decades, and Bochum is essentially its permanent home. Families with children find it an easy win. Tickets are moderately priced and the show runs most evenings with weekend matinees.
